In 2005 Ocarina, in association with Kairos Communications Maynooth, produced two children's programmes for the then Department of Education and Science - now Education and Skills. In each programme two children teamed up to explore what their lives would be like if they lived in another part of European Union very different to where they come from in Ireland. Both programmes were broadcast on TG4. "As Go Brách Linn" loosely means 'away with us on an adventure'.
In the first programme, two boys Padraic and Noel from the Aran Islands, off the west coast of Ireland, travelled from their home in the most Westerly part of the European Union, to Helsinki one of the most North Easterly. They lived with a family in a modern apartment block and went to the ultra modern local school a million miles from the architecture of their own school on Inis Mór. The children had never seen snow before and during their week saw things they would never see or experience back home like reindeer meat, 'Gluggi' a warm winter drink and went skiing which was on the school curriculum! They also managed to teach their Finish classmates a few phrases in Irish.
In the second programme two girls Niamh and Orla from Dublin went to Cefalú in Sicily. They stayed in a beautiful apartment that was hundreds of years old in a town dripping with history. The young family also had two young girls who spoke mostly Italian while they spoke mostly Irish. School was fun and they got to show off their Irish dancing skills and even taught their Sicilian classmates how to play camogie. From their new classmates and teachers they learned new artistic skills and Italian sports like mountain biking. Outside of school they tastes more flavours of ice cream they ever knew existed!
